Connecticut Senate Approves Mattress Recycling Bill

Alexandria, VA (PRWEB) May 17, 2013

The International Sleep Products Association (ISPA) successfully negotiated bipartisan mattress recycling legislation with Connecticut state officials and lobbied for its passage. On Thursday, the Connecticut Senate approved the legislation by a 28-8 vote.

The bill now to goes to Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy (D) for his consideration and he has approximately 15 days to decide whether to sign the bill into law.

The legislation authorizes an industry-led non-profit organization to create and run a mattress recycling council that has the authority to set and collect a consumer fee to fund recycling operations. The bill establishes a recycling program with a sustainable funding mechanism that will not harm the mattress industry.

We thank Environment Committee Chairman Senator Edward Meyer (D-Guilford) for his leadership in crafting legislation that will promote mattress recycling and create jobs, said ISPA President, Ryan Trainer. This legislation serves as a model for solving the problem of mattress disposal without negatively impacting our industry.

The legislation will create the nations first mattress recycling law of its kind. ISPA is currently working on similar legislation in other states where we will lobby for a program that reduces the impact of illegally dumped mattresses, harnesses existing infrastructure for transporting used mattresses to recyclers, creates jobs, and minimizes costs to both government and consumers.
